Lido Valtravaglia

Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Lido Valtravaglia is a free-access pebble and sand beach located on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore in Porto Valtravaglia, in the centre of the town. The beach is 13 metres wide and situated at an altitude of 195 metres above sea level. The bathing water has been classified as excellent for the reference period 2019–2022.

Lake Maggiore. The bathing area covers 0.100 square kilometres. The water body is part of the Ticino River basin.

Location

Porto Valtravaglia, Varese province, Lombardy region, on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore in the town centre. Parking is available. The competent authority is the Municipality of Porto Valtravaglia (telephone 0332543801).

Facilities

Parking, shower fountain, stairs for lake entry, public toilets in proximity to the beach. Dogs are prohibited.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (reference period 2019–2022). Monitoring by the Pallanza buoy (CNR and ARPA) tracks pathogenic bacteria including Escherichia coli, intestinal Enterococci, and cyanobacteria. The sewage system has been mapped to identify and resolve malfunctions. The SIMILE project manages the lake and involves citizens in reporting water health information via an app. In 2021, a hydrocarbon pollution incident in the adjacent zone was promptly remediated by a specialised company.

Risks

Possible short-duration pollution events from soil runoff, standing water, and spills of various kinds following unfavourable weather conditions such as strong atmospheric events. Accidental or unauthorised discharge of wastewater or polluting debris is possible. Seasonal algal blooms are possible, with potentially toxic species belonging to cyanobacteria and phytoplankton components.
