Municipality of Penela, in the Mondego River basin. Monitoring point coordinates: Latitude 40.0261°, Longitude -8.30389°.

June 28 to August 31, 2025. Sampling frequency: once per week.

Water Quality

Water quality classification complies with Decreto-Lei 135/09 (June 3rd), amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012 (May 23rd). A sample collected on July 29, 2024 exceeded microbiological contamination indicator values for the bathing water's quality class, but did not reach bathing restriction levels. A follow-up collection on August 1, 2024 returned results in accordance with quality standards. Zero days of bathing were advised against or prohibited due to short-term pollution events in the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Potential microbiological pollution sources include diffuse sources upstream from agricultural or forestry activities, solid waste from beach activities, and a high number of users. Cyanobacteria and phytoplankton have a likely potential for proliferation.
