Maddalusa is a sandy bathing beach in Agrigento, Sicily, with a medium slope in the submerged zone and highly degraded terrain towards the shore. The beach is located along the coast of the Sicily Strait. It has been classified as having excellent water quality based on historical monitoring data from the last four years.

Coastal marine water body in the Sicily Strait, sector 14 of the regional water plan (Sicilia). The bathing area extends 1.205 km. The smaller hydrographic basin lies between the Canne and San Leone rivers.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Quality determination is based on analysis of historical data from at least the last four years of contamination parameters. Sources of pollution include discharge of treated and untreated wastewater from the Akragas River mouth and a sewage pumping station (Ex Padri Vocazionisti).

Risks

Treated and untreated wastewater discharge from the Akragas River mouth (37.2642 N 13.5773 E) and from a sewage pumping station (37.2628 N 13.5771 E). Short-duration pollution events include urban stormwater runoff, accidental failures of the sewage pumping station, overflow events, and discharge of treated and untreated wastewater. Anomalous situations occur from accidental pumping station failures, overflow events, and meteorological events causing stormwater mixing with sewage, increasing effluent volume. No cyanobacteria proliferation potential identified. No macroalgae, phytoplankton, or potentially toxic species proliferation events recorded in the last four years.
