Water

Étang de Berre is a coastal and transitional water body with multiple sandy and pebbly beaches. Robinsons beach is 679 metres long with an average width of 5 metres, oriented E-SE. The lagoon receives water from three main tributaries: Arc, Touloubre, and Cadière rivers.

Season

Monitoring occurs from May to September. Minimum of 4 samples per season required for quality classification.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified using four categories: insufficient, sufficient, good, or excellent. Classification is based on intestinal enterococci and E. coli measurements (UFC/100ml). Excellent quality requires enterococci ≤100 UFC/100ml and E. coli ≤250 UFC/100ml at the 95th percentile. Robinsons beach achieved Excellent classification in 2024, with historical ratings of Good (2021) and Excellent (2022, 2023). Wastewater treatment plants in the watershed are potential pollution sources, particularly the Arc river near Champigny beach.

Risks

Three beaches identified as sensitive to storm contamination: Champigny, Marettes, and Romaniquette. Storm events can cause bacterial contamination of bathing waters; 24-hour beach closures are recommended following storms or rainfall exceeding 10mm/24h. Robinsons beach has elevated numbers of discharge outlets (1 elevated, 1 moderate, 7 low-level) within 1000 metres. Water confinement risk exists due to beach location in a small cove.
