Risks

Dinoflagellate microalga Ostreopsis ovata has been present seasonally (July–September) in the past four years. Blooms have caused mortality and distress in marine organisms including starfish, sea urchins, crabs, and cephalopods. Swimmers have experienced transient symptoms such as rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, fever, dermatitis, and conjunctivitis during high Ostreopsis ovata concentrations, particularly following storms that promote aerosol formation.
