Milano Marittima is a bathing area located 100 metres north of the Porto Canale di Cervia in the Emilia-Romagna region. The beach extends from 200 metres north of the northern pier of the canal to the foot of that same pier, with a width of 50–60 metres. The area is classified as a flat, high-stability coastal marine water body. Sand extraction activities take place in the area, and sediment movement by propellers occurs at the canal mouth to allow vessel entry.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent for reference years 2021–2024. Escherichia coli at 90th percentile: 65 CFU/100 mL; at 95th percentile: 99 CFU/100 mL. Intestinal enterococci at 90th percentile: 14 CFU/100 mL; at 95th percentile: 15 CFU/100 mL. No direct river courses or marine discharges enter the bathing profile area. No direct pollution sources identified. During heavy precipitation, discharges from Porto Canale di Cervia may activate and reach the sea near the bathing area.

Risks

The Porto Canale di Cervia outlet located to the south may trigger eutrophication phenomena during intense precipitation. Phytoplankton blooms (Raphidophyceae Fibrocapsa japonica) were recorded from 2015–2018 but none reported in recent years. Macroalgae proliferation (genus Ulva) occurred during July–August 2018 in the central-northern coastal stretch, affecting beach recreation. No cyanobacterial eutrophic events have been reported.
