Millinger Meer is a natural lake bathing area located in the Kleve district. The bathing beach has a sandy and silty substrate with a natural shoreline structure. The lake covers 33.25 hectares with an average depth of 1.9 metres and maximum depth of 4 metres. Water transparency averages 2.2 metres, and the water body is unstratified with a water exchange time of 30 days or less. The lake has been designated as an EU bathing water since 1978.

Water

Natural lake. Area: 33.25 hectares. Average depth: 1.9 metres. Maximum depth: 4 metres. Water transparency: minimum 1.8 metres, maximum 2.5 metres, average 2.2 metres. Water temperature: minimum 15.5 °C, maximum 25.6 °C, average 20.0 °C. Water exchange time: ≤ 30 days. Unstratified water body. Elevation: lowland (< 200 metres above sea level). Catchment area: 10–100 km². Substrate: sandy and silty. Water level fluctuation: 0.3 metres.

Location

The bathing area is located in Rees. The beach section extends 20 metres along the shore. UTM coordinates: E 320039 N 5742347.

Water Quality

Bathing water quality classified as 'excellent' for all four years from 2015 to 2018. The water body is eutrophic (nutrient level 4 – eutroph II). No microbiological or chemical contamination of sediments detected. Wastewater from small waterside properties is treated in small biological treatment plants before underground infiltration. Rainwater discharges consist primarily of uncontaminated roof water and, in isolated cases, lightly loaded precipitation water, located approximately 3.5 km from the bathing area, with no significant influence on water quality.

Risks

Cyanobacteria blooms observed occasionally within the last four years, with medium risk of future mass development. Macroalgae including filamentous algae and water pest recorded with mass growth observed in 2008. Rough hornbloom also present with mass growth in 2008. Medium risk of future mass phytoplankton development. Cercariae (duck flea causing swimmer's itch) not completely excluded due to the natural character of the bathing water, though temporary occurrence only. Grazing land and arable land in the catchment area may potentially influence water quality. Winter waterfowl use the lake as a resting area with low breeding season populations of water-dependent species.
