Schwielochsee Goyatz

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Schwielochsee is one of the largest natural lakes in Brandenburg with a surface area of 13.2 km². It is located 80 km southeast of Berlin on the Beeskow Plateau. The lake extends 8.5 km from south to north and is up to 2.6 km wide. A narrow constriction north of Goyatz divides the lake into the Great and Small Schwielochsee. The bathing spot at Goyatz has received an excellent water quality classification consistently from 2016 to 2024.

Water

Natural freshwater lake with a surface area of 1,327 hectares (13.2 km²). Mean depth 2.6 m, maximum depth 7.3 m. Water exchange time 30 days or less. Sandy soil geology with meadow shoreline. The lake is unstratified with water temperature ranging from 14.1 °C to 24.7 °C. Beach length 100 m.

Location

Located in Goyatz, a municipality in Schwielochsee district (Landkreis Dahme-Spreewald) in Brandenburg, 80 km southeast of Berlin on the Beeskow Plateau. The bathing spot is identified at coordinates Rechtswert 3443589 and Hochwert 5763641.

Water Quality

Excellent classification for the periods 2016–2019, 2017–2020, 2018–2021, 2019–2022, 2020–2023, and 2021–2024. Microbiological monitoring shows Escherichia coli 95-percentile values of 58–138 per 100 ml and intestinal enterococci 95-percentile values of 77–95 per 100 ml. No exceedances of individual microbiological parameter thresholds have been recorded. pH values range from 8.14 to 8.99 (mean 8.5). Water transparency ranges from 0.5 m to 2 m (mean 1.2 m). Ecological status class moderate (ÖZK 3). Natural nutrient status and measured nutrient status both classified as eutrophic.

Risks

Medium risk of future mass development of phytoplankton. No cyanobacterial blooms observed during the bathing season; no risk of future mass cyanobacteria development. No macroalgae or aquatic plants present. No risk of cercarial dermatitis. Short-term microbiological contamination and other pollution are not expected.
