Fossola is a bathing water located in Riomaggiore, Liguria, part of the Cinque Terre area. It features a coarse-grained beach situated between two sections of high, rocky coastline. The beach is free and gravelly, with vineyard terraces and the Cinque Terre coastal road SP32 above the bathing area. The site is part of the Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area.

Coastal waters. The bathing area covers 1.073 km. The site is located in an urbanized context with a river mouth (id.283 stream) discharging directly into the bathing water.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2018–2021 assessment period). The Ligurian Sea is characterized by oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacterial blooms. Ostreopsis ovata monitoring from 2018–2021 showed no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit at the reference station in Monterosso al Mare.

Risks

A wastewater treatment plant for Riomaggiore is located approximately 150 m from the sampling station on the western boundary, with a sewer pipe that originates within the bathing water but runs outside it before discharging offshore. A tourist port is located approximately 225 m to the west. During heavy precipitation, increased stream flow may transport effluent downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have appeared in Liguria over the past decade; inhalation of aerosol can cause temporary, reversible respiratory irritation and fever in sensitive individuals.
