Montelago

Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Montelago is a rocky beach with free access located on the western shore of Lake Lugano in Brusimpiano, Lombardia. The beach spans 18 metres and features an adjacent grassy area and surrounding public park. Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2018–2022. The lake is subject to international protection through the Italian-Swiss Commission for the Protection of Waters (CIPAIS).

Location

Brusimpiano, on the western shore of Lake Lugano, a few kilometres from the city. Parking available nearby. Ferry dock and mooring facilities for small boats present.

Public park, nearby parking, multiple bars and restaurants, ferry dock, mooring for small boats. Dogs allowed on leash.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: excellent (reference period 2018–2022). No threshold exceedances recorded since 2018. Wastewater treatment infrastructure (facility AG01202401 in Brusimpiano) implemented to limit nutrient input from human activities.

Risks

Possible critical conditions from adverse meteorological events such as severe storms causing soil runoff, water stagnation, and various spillages. Seasonal algal blooms are possible. Cyanobacteria may produce toxins causing skin reactions and gastrointestinal disturbances. Possible accidental or unauthorised discharges of wastewater or polluting debris.
