Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Motzener See is a lake situated approximately 20 kilometres south of Berlin on the western edge of the Dahme Lake District. The lake is almost 4 kilometres long, oriented north to south, with a surface area of 202 hectares. It has an average depth of 8.1 metres and a maximum depth of 16.6 metres. The lake has been intensively monitored and shows excellent bathing water quality with stable water conditions and good clarity.

Water

Natural lake with surface area of 202 hectares. Mean depth 8.1 metres, maximum depth 16.6 metres. Water exchange time of 9 years. Water temperature range from 9.7°C to 25.2°C. pH value averages 8.7. Transparency ranges from 0.5 to 2.1 metres with mean of 1.4 metres. Freshwater lake with salinity less than 0.5 per mille. Ecological status classified as moderate under EU Water Framework Directive.

Location

Located near Kallinchen in Zossen municipality, Teltow-Fläming district, approximately 20 kilometres south of Berlin. The bathing area is at Kallinchen Campingplatz on the western shore. Coordinates: Rechtswert 3402301, Hochwert 5785294. Beach length is 40 metres.

Facilities

Campingplatz present on western shore. Beach volleyball available. Tauchschule (diving school) with diving base located at Kallinchen. Multiple access points including Motzen with golf and country club and residential areas.

Season

Monitoring conducted through four-weekly sampling according to Brandenburg bathing water regulations.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent across monitoring periods 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. E. coli concentrations (95-percentile): 33–46 per 100ml. Intestinal enterococci concentrations (95-percentile): 63–90 per 100ml. No individual value exceedances of microbiological parameters recorded. Measured nutrient content classified as eutrophic. No short-term pollution or other pollution events expected.

Risks

Cyanobacteria bloom observed in 2017. No future risk of cyanobacteria mass development. Macroalgae and aquatic plants present but no future risk of mass development. No risk of cercarial dermatitis.
