A wide sandy beach located 200 metres west of the San Bartolomeo River near Castellammare del Golfo in Sicily. The beach is flat and sandy with a width of approximately 50 metres. It experiences high numbers of bathers during the summer season and is situated in an urbanized area with residential villas occupied seasonally.

Coastal marine water in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The monitored area extends approximately 0.490 square kilometres. Coordinates: 38.0248°N 12.9048°E to 38.0245°N 12.8993°E.

Location

Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily (Province of Trapani). Located 200 metres west of the San Bartolomeo River. Parking, beach facilities (lidos), bars, restaurants, and disabled access are available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. The Castellammare del Golfo treatment plant is non-functional, resulting in discharge of municipal effluent into the sea approximately 2.5 kilometres from the monitoring point.

Risks

Municipal wastewater discharge from non-functioning sewage treatment plant located 250 metres offshore at coordinates 38.033818°N 12.876231°E. No cyanobacterial proliferation potential identified. No macroalgal or phytoplankton proliferation events recorded in the last four years.
