Nidos Beach is a public bathing area located in Neringa Municipality, Klaipėda District, on the open sandy coast of the Baltic Sea. The beach spans 3,200 meters in length with a natural sandy shoreline and dune vegetation separating it from the hinterland. Water depths average 1.20 meters with a maximum depth of 1.80 meters. The beach accommodates approximately 5,000 visitors during peak season under favorable conditions and has been classified as excellent quality from 2018 to 2024.

Location

Neringa Municipality in Klaipėda District, Lithuania. Monitoring coordinates: 55.3159°N, 20.9848°E.

Facilities

Two container toilets and six outdoor toilets. No showers. Lifeguard station and posts located on the dune. Garbage collection daily until 9:00 AM during summer season; waste bins emptied by 8:00 AM and container areas cleaned by 9:00 AM.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent from 2018 to 2024. Water transparency remains constant at approximately 1 meter. Marine phytoplankton blooms occur almost annually depending on air temperature and wind direction, typically in July and August, lasting up to 1.5 weeks. Nutrient enrichment is primarily of natural origin, though human impacts from passing vessels and current-transported pollutants occur occasionally. No large changes in cyanobacteria, macroalgae, or marine phytoplankton distribution have been detected in recent years.

Risks

Occasional short-term oil product spills from passing vessels or resuspension of old contaminants from the seabed, occurring approximately every 2–3 years. Oil platform D6 (Russian territory) approximately 10 kilometers away and Klaipėda port approximately 50 kilometers away present potential pollution sources in case of accidents. Motorized watercraft prohibited except for lifeguards and authorized commercial operators.
