An urban beach with a narrow sand strip bordered by an urban waterfront. A pier extends perpendicular to the shoreline. The beach is located in Viana do Castelo municipality along the Lima River basin.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Sampling frequency is every 3 weeks. No days of bathing prohibition or discouragement due to short-term pollution occurred during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive tributary flow during rainfall with microbiological load entrainment, malfunction of sewage treatment plants or pumping stations, or vessel contamination. Potential faecal contamination sources include the local sewerage network, the Lima River, and Viana do Castelo seaport. Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with historical occurrence of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential are both low with no historical occurrence.
