Pāvaloste is a bathing area located on the coast of the Baltic Sea in Latvia. The bathing water profile was developed in 2017 by the Health Inspectorate in cooperation with the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre. Water quality is assessed based on microbiological criteria, specifically E. coli and intestinal enterococci levels, with consideration given to blue-green algae blooms. The bathing season in Latvia runs from 15 May to 15 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classification follows a four-class scale: excellent quality, good quality, sufficient quality, and poor quality. For long-term assessment of sea coastal bathing waters, the following criteria apply based on the 95th percentile: excellent quality requires intestinal enterococci ≤100 CFU/100 ml and E. coli ≤250 CFU/100 ml; good quality requires intestinal enterococci ≤200 CFU/100 ml and E. coli ≤500 CFU/100 ml. For sufficient quality (based on 90th percentile): intestinal enterococci ≤185 CFU/100 ml and E. coli ≤500 CFU/100 ml.

Risks

Excessive blue-green algae blooms. Fecal pollution from point sources and diffuse pollution. Sakas River and Pāvaloste harbour are identified as pollution sources. Bathing is forbidden if E. coli exceeds 3000 microorganism cells per 100 ml water and/or intestinal enterococci exceed 500 cells per 100 ml water, or if excessive blue-green algae is observed.
