Water Quality

Water quality is subject to bacteriological monitoring under health control protocols and self-monitoring programs. Historical classification records and sanitization control results have been tracked since 2000. Cyanobacteria and phytoplankton monitoring are conducted. Specific phenomena including physalies (Portuguese man o'war), macroalgae, and swimmer dermatitis are documented.

Physalies (Portuguese man o'war) presence is documented. Phytoplankton and macroalgae occurrences are monitored. Swimmer dermatitis cases have been recorded. Potential pollution sources include wastewater discharge, stormwater runoff, non-collective sanitation systems, and maritime activities from nearby Capbreton port.
