Plage d'Honneur is a bathing beach in the commune of Marseillan. The beach has an open configuration, allowing pollution to disperse easily toward the sea. The water quality is classified as excellent according to the 2006/7/CE Directive criteria and good according to the 76/160/CEE Directive based on monitoring data from 2005 to 2010. Summer population increases can exceed eight times the normal level.

Water

Mediterranean water. The beach is adjacent to the Etang de Thau lagoon, which serves as a potential pollution source. The area is characterized by low tidal amplitude and weak swell typical of Mediterranean waters. A sandy ridge elevated along the shoreline acts as a natural barrier.

Location

Marseillan commune. The beach is accessible via the Canal de Pisse-Saumes, which connects the Etang de Thau to the Mediterranean. An immediate perimeter extends 1 km in each direction from the bathing zone.

Season

Summer season. Monitoring occurs during summer period with concentrated observation of rainfall-related events (data analyzed from 2006-2009).

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent under the 2006/7/CE Directive and good under the 76/160/CEE Directive for the period 2005-2010. Microbiological data from ARS monitoring do not exceed thresholds established by AFSSET. Water quality shows no deterioration linked to rainfall. Self-monitoring data confirm good water quality during summer periods.

Risks

The Etang de Thau and Canal de Pisse-Saumes present potential pollution sources. Summer population increases may create contamination risks. Jellyfish presence can cause inconvenience to swimmers. No direct discharges of wastewater or storm water affect the beach. No agricultural pollution, industrial sites, or green algae phenomena are present.
