Les Poilus is a semi-open bathing beach located in the commune of Saint-Brévin-les-Pins in France. The beach is characterized by the presence of groynes that reduce local hydrodynamism. Water quality has been classified as excellent since 2008 under the 2006/7/CE Directive criteria. The beach experiences significant seasonal population increases during summer months, with the population multiplying by 2.3 during the bathing season.

Coastal marine water body characterized as semi-open. Influenced by the Loire River and indirectly by the Courance watercourse. Hydrodynamism is reduced locally due to the presence of groynes. Tidal action influences current speed and direction.

Location

Saint-Brévin-les-Pins commune, Brittany coast, France. The beach is located in a semi-open coastal area along the Loire estuary.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent since 2008 under Directive 2006/7/CE criteria. Previously classified as good quality in 2005, 2006, and from 2009 onwards under Directive 76/160/CEE criteria. Monitoring data available from 2005 to 2009 and beyond.

Risks

Potential pollution sources include: wastewater treatment pump stations (PR Villa and Fort) capable of occasional overflow and direct discharge to the beach via storm outlets; poor sanitation connections causing overflows during heavy rainfall; increased wastewater network load during summer due to population increase; bird-related pollution as the beach is located in a ZICO (Important Bird Area); regular arrivals of jellyfish. Low risk of rainfall-related pollution during summer season (rare heavy rainfall events). Southwest wind can push pollution toward the coast.
