Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains is a coastal resort in the Landes department of Aquitaine, France, with two ocean beaches: Plage Nord and Plage Centrale. Both beaches offer sandy shores with a 2% slope and are framed by natural, undeveloped riverbanks. The area experiences a temperate oceanic climate with mild winters and moderately warm summers, dominated by westerly winds. The beaches are situated in a relatively urbanised setting with residential areas and the town of Vieux-Boucau behind the dunes.

Water

Ocean beaches. Plage Nord: 400 m long, 70 m wide, 30,800 m² surface area, 2% average slope. Plage Centrale: 400 m long, 60 m wide, 24,000 m² surface area, 2% average slope. Both beaches are sandy with water transparency greater than 1 metre (Secchi depth). Water circulation shows a predominantly north-south current.

Location

Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains is located 29 km northwest of Dax in the Landes department. The town is at 3 metres altitude with coordinates 43°47'10" North, 1°24'0" West. Access to both beaches is by road with parking available.

Facilities

Both beaches have sanitisation facilities, waste collection, and first aid posts. A information display board is located at the first aid post. Plage Nord has a municipal campground behind the dunes and a surf school. Naturism is tolerated at the northern end of Plage Nord. Plage Centrale has commercial facilities along a paved access road. Animals are prohibited at both beaches.

Season

Plage Nord: mid-June to September. Plage Centrale: mid-May to September.

Water Quality

Both Plage Nord and Plage Centrale achieved 'Excellent' water quality classification under the 2006 Directive based on the last four years of data. Historical classifications from 2006–2010 show consistent 'A' ratings (good quality water). E. coli values have ranged from 30–177 CFU/100 ml with guide value 100 and imperative value 2000. Enterococci values have ranged from 41–1414 CFU/100 ml with AFSSET threshold 370. No episodes of algae proliferation, foam deposits, or bather dermatitis cases were recorded.
