Mediterranean Sea. The beach has a sandy and rocky substrate with an abrupt bathymetric profile indicating exposure to swell and regular water circulation. Posidonia seagrass meadows are present between 200 meters east of the beach. Water temperature in summer averages 22°C with a maximum of 26°C.

Location

Ramatuelle, located in the Var département on the French Riviera. The beach is situated in the Bonporté bay, approximately 5 kilometers from the treated wastewater outfall of Bonne-Terrasse.

Season

Monitoring occurs year-round with focus on the bathing season. Phytoplankton blooms are primarily a concern during summer months when water temperatures are elevated.

Water Quality

Classification: Type 1 bathing water profile indicating that the risk of bathing water pollution is not established. Water quality is classified as sufficient, good, or excellent according to Directive 2006/7/CE based on the last four bathing seasons. Historical classifications show rating B in 2006, improving to rating A in 2007, 2008, and 2009. The Escalet stream drains an urbanized watershed with mixed pollution (organic and mineral) including high suspended solids concentration, elevated copper, BOD5, nitrogen and phosphorus levels, traces of diesel fuel and surfactants.

Risks

Potential risks include phytoplankton proliferation (blooms) from photophilic algae on rocks near the beach and from the Escalet stream inputs. Urban stormwater discharges through the Escalet stream present pollution risks in wet weather. The water treatment plant lift station is located 35 meters from the sea and poses overflow risk during power outages or pump failures. High summer water temperatures (26°C) and elevated levels of nitrogen and phosphorus from urban runoff create conditions potentially favoring algal growth. The beach is exposed to easterly winds indicating susceptibility to rapid weather changes.
