L'Escalet is a bathing beach in Ramatuelle, France, characterized by sand and rocks with seagrass beds (posidonie). The beach is exposed to swell due to an abrupt bathymetric step, resulting in regular and significant water mixing. The beach is frequently visited by pleasure boats in the Bonporté bay. Water temperature averages 22°C in summer, reaching a maximum of 26°C.

Location

Ramatuelle, in the Var region of France, on the Mediterranean coast near Cavalaire-sur-Mer and La Croix Valmer.

Water Quality

Water quality classification Type 1 (no proven risk of bathing water pollution). Quality rated as sufficient, good, or excellent under Directive 2006/7/CE based on the last four bathing seasons. Historical classification: 2006 B (fair quality), 2007–2009 A (good quality). Mixed pollution type (organic and mineral) identified in the watercourse with high suspended matter concentrations, significant copper, BOD5, nitrogen, and phosphorus levels, traces of diesel fuel, and surfactants. Urban rainfall runoff via the Escalet stream and boat traffic in Bonporté bay influence the beach.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation potentially concerning; regular water mixing should limit bloom formation risk. Elevated summer water temperature (26°C). Potential pollution from urban stormwater discharge via the Escalet stream. Risk of sewage contamination during heavy rain or storm events due to network saturation. Potential risk from pipeline breaches in the submarine outfall under particular weather conditions (North to North-East wind and current regimes).
