The Cognac-la-Forêt bathing water body is a lake located in Haute-Vienne, France, at an altitude of 338 metres. Its total surface area is approximately 12,500 square metres, with only the south-eastern portion designated for swimming. The swimming zone measures 130 metres in length with a maximum width of 30 metres, and a small basin of 30 by 10 metres. The lake bottom and beach are sandy, with artificial sand surrounded by grassy areas. Only swimming activities are permitted on this site.

Water

Artificial lake with a total surface area of approximately 12,500 square metres. The swimming zone is 130 metres long and 30 metres wide at maximum. Maximum depth in the main swimming area is approximately 4 metres; the small basin has a maximum depth of 0.8 metres. The lake is fed by an upstream pond which receives water from a spring, with water supplied via canals that intercept two additional small springs. The lake has a surface overflow weir.

Location

Cognac-la-Forêt, Haute-Vienne department, Limousin region, France. Coordinates: 01°00'25''E, 45°49'44''N. Average visitor attendance is 200 people, with peaks up to 500 people during peak periods. Parking is available.

Facilities

Supervised bathing site. Equipped with showers, toilets, and a rescue post. Drinking water point available. Animals are prohibited. The site is not accessible to persons with reduced mobility. Two information notice boards displaying official documents are present on the rescue post facade and south of the bathing zone. Vegetation bordering the lake is regularly cut to facilitate lifeguard supervision.

Season

1 July to 31 August. Supervision hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10:00–12:00 and 14:00–19:00; Sunday 14:00–19:00. Closed on Mondays. The lake is emptied for approximately 6 months with refilling in April.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored during the official bathing season. Cyanobacteria monitoring has been conducted since 2006. Microbiological analyses include total coliforms, enterococci, and E. coli. Secchi transparency (water clarity) has been measured since 2006. Water quality classification follows Directive 2006/7/CE.

Risks

Cyanobacteria have been detected in the water. Runoff water enters the lake. Potential pollution sources are present in the watershed.
