La Gèmerie is a bathing area covering approximately 9,000 m² located on a 13.7-hectare water body. The beach is sandy with a maximum depth of 3.5 metres and water transparency exceeding 1 metre. The water body is a closed plan with no circulation. Bathing is permitted only within the area delimited by floating buoys, while other water activities such as fishing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and diving take place outside this designated swimming zone.

Water

A former quarry converted into a water body. Surface area of the bathing zone is approximately 9,000 m². Total water body surface area is 137,001 m². Maximum depth is 3.5 metres. Beach slope is 5%. Water transparency exceeds 1 metre. The water source is a spring. The water body is closed with no water circulation.

Location

La Gèmerie is located in the commune of Arnage, situated south of Allonnes and north of Arnage, near the ring road connecting the two towns. The site is accessible via Boulevard Pierre Lefaucheux (Allonnes–Arnage) and Route D323 (Spay–La Suze). A parking area is available at the site.

Facilities

Lifeguard post located near the middle of the beach. Parking facilities include 2 urinals, 2 toilet cabins, 2 outdoor showers. Beach facilities include 2 urinals, 2 toilet cabins, 1 accessible toilet cabin for disabled persons, 2 outdoor showers. Connection to wastewater network and pumping system available. Bathing information documents are displayed at the lifeguard post. Daily beach cleaning and waste collection occur during the bathing period. Animals are prohibited on the beach and in the water.

Season

Official opening period: last two weekends of June and the months of July and August. Supervision hours during opening period: 2:00 PM to 7:15 PM daily, with 7:30 PM on Sundays.

Water Quality

Water quality has been consistently good or excellent since 2000. From 2000 to 2012, ratings ranged from 6A to 7B. From 2013 onwards, ratings have been excellent (classified as 6B or higher under the updated notation system). In summer 2008, floating algae in the form of foam appeared on the water body with a milky white appearance; analysis revealed picoplancton cyanobacteria. Swimming was prohibited from 28 July to 2 August 2008. Development of cyanobacteria may impact water transparency.

Risks

Accidental pollution risk via the stormwater drainage network. A pumping station has been in place since spring 2015. Low relief provides some sensitivity to runoff. Cyanobacteria development may impact water quality.
