Plauer See is a natural lake situated southwest of Brandenburg an der Havel in Brandenburg, Germany. It covers 666 hectares and is part of the Brandenburg Lake District alongside Breitlingsee, Möserschen See, and Wendsee. The lake is divided by the island of Wusterau into eastern and western basins and is traversed by the River Havel. It has a maximum depth of 7.3 metres and average depth of 2.4 metres, with an unshallowed, chalk-rich character and dense natural reed beds along its shores.

Water

Natural freshwater lake with surface area of 666 hectares. Maximum depth 7.3 metres, mean depth 2.4 metres. Water temperature ranges from 14.6 to 29.1 °C (mean 21 °C). Transparency ranges from 0.2 to 1.4 metres (mean 1 metre). pH ranges from 7.6 to 9 (mean 8.2). Salinity less than 0.5 parts per thousand. Water exchange time approximately 30 days or less. Water level fluctuations approximately 1.00 to 1.20 metres.

Location

Camping and Recreation Park at Plauer See, located in the northern part of the lake near Plaue, a district of Brandenburg an der Havel. The bathing area has a beach approximately 42 metres long.

Boat rental, raft rental, jetty, passenger ship moorage, bicycle rental, fishing permits, media library, internet, fitness room, massage services, lifeguards present at designated bathing area.

Season

Quality monitoring conducted throughout the bathing season at four-week intervals.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent quality in assessment periods 2016–2019, 2017–2020, 2018–2021, 2019–2022, 2020–2023, and 2021–2024. Ecological status class 3 (moderate) under Water Framework Directive. No individual value exceedances of microbiological parameters recorded in the last four years. Monitored every four weeks during bathing season for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci.

Risks

Cyanobacteria blooms observed occasionally during bathing season; warning signs inform public when present. Phytoplankton shows medium risk of future mass development. No danger of cercarial dermatitis from waterfowl. Low tendency towards blue-green algae development overall. Water transparency can decrease to 0.5 metres in late summer.
