El Arenisco – Piscina Natural de Punta del Hidalgo is a coastal bathing area located on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach has a length of 146 metres and a width of 19.9 metres. It is exposed to moderate wave conditions with a gravel substrate. The area is designated for maritime coastal waters and is monitored for water quality based on faecal contamination indicators.

Location

Located in Punta del Hidalgo, municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. Pedestrian access is good. Vehicle access is good. Parking is available and good quality.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of faecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) according to RD 1341/2007. A microbiological contamination episode of short duration occurred from 1–4 July 2019. The surface coastal water body ES70TFTI1_1 (Punta de Teno – Punta del Rosquete) is in good ecological status.

Risks

Four identified pollution sources: discharge from Columbus Apartments pool, discharge from Altagay Building pool, EBAR overflow at Punta Hidalgo, and submarine outfall at Punta Hidalgo. Flandes Ravine watercourse present. Episodic contamination risks include stormwater discharge from heavy rainfall, raw and treated urban wastewater (from pipe breakage, treatment failure, or unauthorised discharge), and salt water disinfection from pool emptying. Cyanobacteria Trichodesmium proliferation episodes recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
