Playa Castillo – Bajamar is a 400-metre-long coastal beach in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. The beach has a width of 90 metres and features dark gravel and sand substrate. It is exposed to moderate wave action with a tidal range of 1–3 metres. The beach is situated in a natural coastal water body and is monitored for bathing water quality during the official swimming season.

Natural coastal water body. Bathymetry ranges from 0 to −1 metre. Area of 400 metres length and 90 metres width. Moderate wave exposure. Moderate wave regime. Tidal range of 1–3 metres. Dark gravel and sand substrate. Water temperature and flow characteristics typical of exposed Atlantic coastal waters.

Location

Located in Bajamar, municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, island of Tenerife, Canary Islands. Parking is available and in good condition. Pedestrian and vehicle access are both available and in good condition.

Facilities

Lifeguards present. Public distribution network water available for consumption. Showers, foot-washing stations, services, changing rooms, bars, and waste bins available. Public telephone and public address system present. Disabled access available in good condition. Maritime promenade present. Umbrella and parasol rental not available. Canopy and sun lounger rental not available. Medical attention available; physician not on site.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) collected over four years in accordance with Spanish Royal Decree 1341/2007. The underlying water body (ES70TFTI1_1 - Punta de Teno – Punta del Roquete) is in good ecological status. Microbiological contamination episodes occurred in August 2011, August 2013, July 2018, and July 2020, all of short duration. Contamination sources include stormwater discharge, raw or treated urban wastewater (pipeline breaks, sewage network failures, emergency overflows, unauthorised discharges), and desinfected saltwater discharge from pool emptying.

Risks

Four identified point sources of contamination: Bajamar emergency relief outlet (EBAR), Bajamar wastewater outfall, Bajamar pool drainage, and Bajamar public pools. Two watercourses: Barranco de Vargas and Barranco de Izoque. Episodic cyanobacteria (Trichodesmium) proliferation recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae.
