Playa de Armintza is a semi-urban beach located in a rocky inlet east of Armintza port in the municipality of Lemoiz, Bizkaia. The beach is 250 metres long and composed of rocks and coarse sand, primarily visited by divers. It experiences moderate wave exposure and has a low occupancy rate. The beach is managed by the municipality of Lemoiz and the Department of Environment of the Bizkaia Provincial Council.

Water

Coastal water body in the Cantabria-Matxitxako mass. The beach has a length of 250 metres, average width of 55 metres, low tide surface area of 18,750 square metres, and high tide surface area of 7,500 square metres. Maximum tidal range is 4.70 metres and minimum tidal range is 1 metre. Water renewal rate is less than or equal to 7 days. Wave exposure degree is low with moderate wave conditions.

Location

Located in Lemoiz, Bizkaia, in the Cantabria-Matxitxako coastal water body, east of Armintza port. The beach is bordered by a road to the south. Urban parking area is available.

Facilities

Two lifeguards, two shower bases with showers and drinking fountains, public toilets and washbasins, yellow and green waste bins, first aid kit, medical equipment available by telephone, lost child identification bracelets, information panels, hand-held megaphone, and dog access prohibited during bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2013 and 2014 was Excellent according to Directive 2006/7/EC. The 2015 classification was Good. Monitoring measured Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations. The associated water body (Cantabria-Matxitxako) has Good Ecological Status, Good Chemical Status, and Good Overall Status as of 2014.

Risks

Toxic benthic microalgae (genera Ostreopsis, Prorocentrum, and Coolia) are probable in the area. The main pollution source is the Andraka (Amorraga) river which discharges into the beach; however, the Armintza wastewater treatment plant has operated since 2011 with secondary aerobic treatment achieving over 80% BOD removal and ammonia nitrogen elimination.
