Playa Barrañán is a maritime bathing beach located in Arteixo, A Coruña, Galicia. The beach is approximately 787 metres long and 20 metres wide, composed of pebbles and sand. It experiences strong waves and windy conditions. The beach has high visitor attendance and is situated in a semi-urbanised area.

Maritime bathing zone. Length 787 metres, width 20 metres. Part of the Costa da Morte water body. Located within the Galicia-Costa hydrographic demarcation and Costa da Coruña entre Cedeira e Ferrol river basin.

Arteixo municipality, A Coruña province, Galicia, Spain. Reference locality: O Igrexario (Sorrizo). UTM coordinates: 536111 (X), 4795793 (Y), European Datum 1950, UTM 29N.

Water Quality

Water quality classification varies between the two sampling points: one point classified as Excellent, the other as Good. E. coli and Enterococcus concentrations were monitored from 2008 to 2010. The overall water body status is classified as Good.

Risks

Strong waves and windy conditions are present at the beach. Short-duration contamination risk identified from occasional discharges associated with heavy precipitation events (yellow alert for precipitation intensity). Risk of contamination from localised discharges not identified.
