Playa Blanca is a coastal bathing beach located on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach measures 140 meters in length and 22 meters in width, with fine golden sand and rocky areas. It is situated in a protected area with calm waters and experiences a tidal range of 1-3 meters. The bathing season runs from February 1 to November 30 each year.

Water

Coastal seawater body of the south Lanzarote surface water mass (ES70LZTII). Water depth ranges from 0 to -7 meters. Wave exposure is protected with calm water conditions. Substrate consists of fine golden sand and rocks. Tidal range is 1-3 meters.

Location

Playa Blanca, municipality of Yaiza, island of Lanzarote, Las Palmas province, Canary Islands, Spain. Pedestrian and vehicle access are both good. Parking is available but in poor condition. A maritime promenade is present.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on four years of analytical results for fecal indicator bacteria Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci, evaluated according to RD 1341/2007. The water body is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical) with a total state rated as good or better. No previous contamination episodes are recorded.

Risks

Diffuse pollution sources: Port of Playa Blanca (passenger and sports transit) and Marina Rubicón sports port. Point sources: Costa Papagayo submarine outfall and Hotel Princesa Yaiza wastewater treatment facility. Potential short-duration contamination risks include stormwater discharge from heavy rainfall runoff, raw or treated urban wastewater from pipeline breaks or sewage network failures, and accidental spills of hydrocarbons or organic waste from boat cleaning. Cyanobacteria Trichodesmium proliferation episodes occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensively in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
