Cala Canyelles is a sheltered cove beach located in Lloret de Mar, Girona, in northeastern Spain on the Mediterranean coast. The beach is 428 metres long with an average width of 32 metres, composed of very coarse sand. It is situated in a residential setting, bordered to the north by rocky outcrops and to the south by a small sports port. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea cove belonging to water body C14 (Begur-Blanes), classified as a deep rocky-type water body with low continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 37.2 to 38.3 psu. Average water temperatures: June 20.4°C, July 23.2°C, August 24.0°C, September 23.0°C. Water surface area is 13,289 square metres. Significant wave height is 0.69 metres with an average period of 6.2 seconds. Water entry slope is very steep. Coastal evolution shows a loss of 0.76 metres per year.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring is conducted over 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological testing on Saturdays and a minimum of three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators tested are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes assessment of water transparency, coloration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach receives water discharge from the Canyelles stream, which only flows during heavy rain events.

Risks

The beach receives input from the Canyelles stream torrent, which discharges only during heavy rainfall. A secondary emergency outlet (EBAR) at Cala Canyelles functions during winter, releasing pre-screened wastewater from the small urban nucleus of Canyelles. The area is subject to a phytoplankton monitoring programme to detect potentially toxic algal blooms, which are natural phenomena that may occur frequently on some beaches during summer.
