Cala Giverola is an enclosed cove located on the rocky coastline of Tossa de Mar in Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is approximately 151 meters long with an average width of 30 meters and a surface area of 5,149 square meters. It features very coarse sand and is surrounded by cliffs to the north and south in a semi-natural environment. The cove experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea (C14 water body: rocky, deep type with low continental influence). Mean salinity ranges from 37.2 to 38.3 psu. Mean water temperature: June 20.4°C, July 23.0°C, August 23.9°C, September 23.0°C. Significant wave height averages 0.87 meters with mean period of 5.55 seconds, most frequent direction NNE. Predominant sea state is calm. Prevailing winds are easterly and weak. The hydrological response velocity index is high.

Location

Tossa de Mar municipality in Girona, Catalonia, Spain (population 5,845). The cove is situated in La Selva comarca in a rocky coastal area interspersed with small coves. Coordinates are available in UTM format (EU50 datum).

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring is conducted weekly on Saturdays for 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspection occurs a minimum of 3 times per week.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) under EU Directive 2006/7/CE standards. Monitoring includes microbiological analysis (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) and environmental inspection. The cove receives runoff only during heavy rainfall from a small stream. Municipal wastewater from Tossa de Mar (5,662 residents, 26,250 equivalent inhabitants) is treated by the Tossa de Mar treatment plant (EDAR) with biological and tertiary treatment at maximum capacity of 4,500 cubic meters per day, with effluent discharged directly to the sea west of Codolar beach. Approximately 10% of treated water is reused for non-potable urban purposes.

Risks

Monitoring includes surveillance for phytoplankton proliferation and detection of toxic algae species. A management and information protocol exists for alerting the public if toxic species are detected. Jellyfish monitoring is conducted during the bathing season. The cove may experience natural algal blooms, which in most cases form only colored patches without posing risk to swimmers.
