Cala Salionç is a sheltered rocky cove located on the coast of Tossa de Mar in Girona, Catalonia, surrounded by residential development and cliff faces on its northern and southern boundaries. The beach has a mean width of 40 metres and a surface area of 3,709 square metres. It features very coarse sand sediment with a mean grain size of 1.86 mm and a very steep water entry gradient. The cove experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water body type: rocky, deep water with low continental influence. Mean salinity ranges from 33.0 to 38.3 practical salinity units. Water temperatures: June 20.3°C, July 22.9°C, August 24.1°C, September 23.1°C. Significant wave height 0.87 metres, mean period 5.55 seconds, most frequent direction NNE. Predominant sea state: slight waves. Prevailing wind direction and intensity: East, weak.

Location

Tossa de Mar municipality (population 5,930), Girona province, Catalonia. The cove is situated on a rocky stretch of coast within the La Selva region.

Water Quality

Bathing water quality is monitored by the Agència Catalana de l'Aigua (ACA) from June to September each year. Quality classification is determined according to Directive 2006/7/CE using microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) from samples collected fortnightly. Annual quality classifications follow four categories: Excellent, Good, Sufficient, or Insufficient, based on statistical analysis of results from the last four bathing seasons.

Risks

Cala Salionç receives surface water runoff from the Salionç stream only during heavy rainfall events. Wastewater from the residential area discharges to sea through a 300-metre private submarine outfall. A public wastewater treatment plant (EDAR) serving Tossa de Mar discharges biologically treated effluent directly to the coast, with approximately 10 per cent receiving tertiary treatment for non-potable urban reuse.
