Cala Montjoi is a semi-natural cove located at the southern edge of the Cap de Creus Natural Park in Roses, Girona, Catalonia. The beach is enclosed by rocky cliffs on the northeast and southwest, with an average width of 32 metres and a length of 298 metres. The water body is deep rocky type with low continental influence. The beach experiences medium occupancy levels.

Water

Mediterranean Sea water body type C5 (Cap Norfeu: deep rocky type with low continental influence). Average salinity 36.8–39.0 psu. Water temperature: June 20.1°C, July 22.6°C, August 22.4°C, September 20.1°C. Predominant sea state flat. Significant wave height 0.61 metres, average period 5.82 seconds. High hydrological response index during heavy rainfall events. Rec de Montjoi is the only natural watercourse that accumulates runoff during heavy rainfall and discharges into the bathing zone.

Location

Cala Montjoi, municipality of Roses in Alt Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The cove is situated at the southern extremity of the Cap de Creus Natural Park.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring weekly during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspections minimum three times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control measures Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci weekly. Environmental inspections evaluate water transparency, colouration, floating solids, marine vegetation residues, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Roses wastewater treatment system serves the municipality with biological treatment and submarine outfall at Roses beach.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored during bathing season and can occur naturally in summer. Some species may pose health risks, with a management and information protocol in place. Jellyfish presence is monitored. Hydrocarbons and other harmful substances are monitored and analysed when detected.
