Platja de l'Almadrava is a semi-urban, encased beach in Roses, Girona, located in a residential area of the Almadrava urbanisation. The beach is 455 metres long with an average width of 22 metres, composed of medium sand, and features a strong water entry slope. It is bordered to the south-east by rocky terrain with continuity toward the Natural Park of Cap de Creus coast, and to the north-west by cliffs of the urbanisation. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water mass C6 (Canyelles): deep rocky type with low continental influence. Surface area: 9,813 m². Mean salinity range: 36.8–38.7 psu. Mean water temperatures: June 20.0°C, July 22.7°C, August 22.3°C, September 20.9°C. Predominant sea state: flat. Significant wave height: 0.61 m, mean period: 5.82 seconds, most frequent direction: N. Predominant wind direction and intensity: E-weak. The beach receives water input from two streams (Rec de l'Almadrava and Rec de la Torre) that only discharge during heavy rainfall.

Location

Roses, Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated in the Almadrava urbanisation area. Coordinates: UTM X: 513611, Y: 4678001 (EU50).

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring period: 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological sampling on Saturdays and minimum three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Monitoring involves weekly microbiological analysis (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) and a minimum of three weekly environmental inspections. Environmental inspections assess water transparency, colour, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant matter, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach water belongs to a hydrologically high-response index zone.

Risks

The beach is subject to phytoplankton proliferation monitoring. Harmful algal blooms and other natural phenomena are monitored and managed through established protocols. Potential risks from strong rainfall events exist due to stream discharge.
