Cala Reona is a bathing beach located in Cartagena, Murcia region, in the Mediterranean coastal zone. The beach measures 148 metres in length and 15 metres in width with coarse sand. It is a natural, free-access bathing area with high visitor frequency used primarily for daily recreation by local users. The water body is subject to fortnightly inspections during the bathing season to monitor visual parameters and water quality.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water. The beach is 148 metres long and 15 metres wide. There is no current, no whirlpools, and no undertow. The tidal range is microtidal. Annual precipitation in the area is 300 mm per year.

Location

Cartagena, Murcia region, Spain. Pedestrian access is good and vehicle access is good. Disabled access is not available. The sampling point is located at UTM coordinates X: 701772; Y: 4165917 (ETRS89, Huso 30).

Lifeguards (3 personnel), first aid (daily service), medical services and health personnel in nearby area, rescue equipment including life jackets and first aid kits, rescue boat, radio/telephone/radio station, public transport (daily), daily garbage collection, daily beach cleaning, foot wash station (1), public toilet (1), free services, waste bins distributed throughout the area, 1 bar, water sports activities including kayak, snorkel, paddle surf, and diving.

Season

Fortnightly inspections are conducted during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excelente (Excellent), Buena (Good), Suficiente (Sufficient), or Insuficiente (Insufficient) based on current season results and the three previous seasons. Macroalgas risk is assessed as Excelente with low proliferation risk. Fitoplancton risk is Buena with moderate proliferation risk. Medusas risk is Excelente with low proliferation risk. The submarine outfall from the Mar Menor Sur wastewater treatment plant, located 2.6 km from the beach, runs partially buried through the bathing zone and requires continuous maintenance. Short-duration contamination episodes may occur from this source. Urban runoff from rainfall has low frequency and mild impact. Phytoplankton blooms may cause water discoloration due to outfall ruptures.
