Calahonda is a beach in Motril, Granada, located along the Mediterranean coast of Andalucía. It is a natural bathing water area with a length of 1,445 metres and an average width of 40 metres. The beach has dark sand, moderate wave conditions, and is highly occupied during the bathing season. It is an urbanised beach with a promenade and accessible facilities.

Water

Mediterranean coastal waters. Water depth is classified as deep. Substrate consists of mud and sand. Tidal range is microtidal (0–2 metres). Current regime is dominant towards the east, east-southeast, and east-northeast. Wave exposure is moderate, with dominant waves from the east and east-northeast associated with levante wind.

Location

Motril, Granada, Andalucía, Spain. Access is easy on foot or by car. Disabled access is available.

Red Cross post, lifeguards, surveillance equipment, toilets, showers, waste bins, cleaning service, signage, footbridges, promenade, disabled access.

Season

1 June to 30 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2013–2016: Excellent for all four seasons. Short-duration contamination risk is low and microbiological in nature (24 hours). Diffuse pollution sources include land use in the area of influence, built-up surfaces, and altered areas. The Barranco de Vizcarra watercourse is present.
