Playa Las Caletillas is a coastal bathing beach located in Candelaria, Tenerife, Spain. The beach measures 60 metres in length and 27 metres in width. It features a dark gravel and sand substrate with moderate wave exposure. The beach is situated on a natural coastal surface water body and is subject to official monitoring during the bathing season.

Water

Coastal marine water body classified as ES70TFTIV - Punta del Rosquete – Bajas del Puertito (natural coastal surface water). Bathymetry ranges from 0 to -9 metres. Wave exposure is moderate. Tidal range is 1-3 metres. Substrate composition is dark gravel and sand. The water mass is in good ecological status according to the Tenerife Hydrological Plan.

Location

The beach is located in the municipality of Candelaria on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain. It is accessible by foot and vehicle with good access conditions. Parking is available and nearby facilities include a promenade.

Facilities

Public water supply suitable for consumption is available. Facilities include showers, foot-washing areas, services, changing rooms, waste bins, and good pedestrian and vehicle access. Disabled access is available but rated as regular. A public telephone and lifeguards status are not specified.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on microbiological evaluation of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci indicators collected over four years in accordance with Royal Decree 1341/2007. A microbiological contamination episode of short duration occurred from 13-15 September 2021. The coastal surface water body maintains good ecological status.

Risks

Six point sources of contamination have been identified: EBAR overflow at Playa Genaro; EBAR overflow at Las Caletillas; Las Caletillas submarine outfall; ARU discharges at Caletillas 1 and 2; UNELCO discharge at Caletillas (South); and UNELCO discharge at Caletillas (North). The Barranco del Fuerte watercourse is present. Pollution risks include stormwater discharge from heavy rainfall, raw or treated urban wastewater from pipeline breaks or sewer network failures, and cooling water and brine from the Caletillas Thermal Power Plant. Episodes of cyanobacteria (Trichodesmium) proliferation occurred in 2004, 2010, and intensely in 2017. Jellyfish and sea urchins present no risk.
