Playa Charco Verde is a coastal bathing beach located on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach measures 185 meters in length and 65 meters in width, with fine dark sand substrate. It is situated in a protected bay with moderate wave exposure and tidal range of 1 to 3 meters. The beach was closed due to an anomalous situation caused by a volcanic eruption on La Palma that began on 19 September 2021. The official bathing season runs from 1 February to 30 November.

Water

Coastal marine water body. Bathymetry ranges from 0 to -20 metres. Wave regime is moderate with a tidal range of 1 to 3 metres. Substrate is fine dark sand. The water mass is classified as ES70LPTII - Southwest/Natural coastal surface.

Location

The beach is located in the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane on the island of La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain. Pedestrian and vehicle access are both good. Parking is available.

Showers available. Foot wash available. Services available. Disabled access present but in regular condition. Parking available. Health care available. Lifeguards present. Containers available. Umbrella rental available. Lounger rental available. Water activities permitted: snorkelling and canoeing. Beach activities permitted: football and volleyball.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on analysis of faecal contamination indicators Escherichia coli and Enterococcus intestinalis collected over four years according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. The surface coastal water body is in good ecological status (biological and physico-chemical), with an overall good or better state. The beach was closed due to volcanic eruption from 19 September 2021.

Risks

Diffuse pollution source from intensive agricultural zone with fertiliser rich in phosphorus and nitrogen. Episodic contamination risk from rainfall runoff through Barranco Santa Cecilia. Jellyfish and sea urchin presence recorded on 27 March–10 April 2012, 18–25 March 2013, and 5–17 April 2017. Cyanobacteria Trichodesmium proliferation recorded in 2004, 2010, and intensively in 2017. Macroalga presence presents no risk. Volcanic eruption on 19 September 2021 caused closure.
