Playa Puerto Naos is a 510-meter-long coastal bathing beach located on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 75 meters wide with dark gravel and sand substrate, protected from wave exposure with moderate wave conditions. The official swimming season runs from 1 February to 30 November. The beach was closed due to an anomalous situation caused by a volcanic eruption on La Palma that began on 19 September 2021.

Coastal marine water body. Bathymetry ranges from 0 to 50 meters depth. Water mass classification ES70LPTII - Southwest/natural coastal surface. Moderate wave conditions with protected exposure. Tidal range 1-3 meters. Moderate current regime.

Location

Puerto Naos, municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane, island of La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain. Good pedestrian access and vehicular access available. Good disabled access and good parking facilities.

Facilities

Lifeguards present. Public water supply with drinking water available. Showers, foot wash facilities, toilets, changing rooms, waste bins, bars, umbrellas for rent, loungers for rent available. Disabled access available. Medical attention available but no on-site doctor. Public telephone not available. Public address system not available. Permitted activities include motorless boats, motorized boats, snorkeling, canoeing, diving in water, and football and volleyball on sand.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of fecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) according to RD1341/2007. The coastal surface water body ES70LPTII - Southwest is in good ecological status with very good biological status and no physical-chemical pressures, achieving an overall good or better state.

Risks

Point source pollution from Puerto Naos wastewater treatment plant discharge. Sporadic short-duration contamination risk from rainwater runoff generating strong rains. Unpredictable short-duration contamination risk from raw or treated urban wastewater (pipeline breaks, sewage network failures, overflows/emergencies, unauthorized discharges). Two watercourses: Barranco de Tamanca and Los Hombres, and Barranco Las Palmas. Previous contamination episodes involving jellyfish/cnidarians documented in 2012, 2013, and 2017. Cyanobacteria Trichodesmium proliferation episodes documented in 2004, 2010, and intensively in 2017. No risk from jellyfish/sea urchins or macroalgae.
