Playa Los Cochinos, also known as El Cochino, is a coastal bathing area located in San Bartolomé de Tirajana municipality on the island of Gran Canaria, Spain. The beach is 250 meters long and 20 meters wide, featuring fine sand substrate. The water is characterized by calm conditions with wave exposure classified as protected and a tidal range of 1–3 meters. The bathing season runs from 1 February to 30 November.

Location

Located in San Bartolomé de Tirajana municipality, Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands, Spain. Near the locality of Playa del Inglés. Pedestrian and vehicular access are both good. Parking is available but rated as regular. Boardwalk access is available.

Disabled access available and rated as good. No public water supply. No changing rooms. No bars. No lifeguards. No medical attention or doctors on site.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on fecal indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) evaluated over four years according to RD1341/2007. The water body ES70GCTII - Costera Suroeste is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical), with overall status rated as good or better. Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes of Trichodesmium occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017.

Risks

Multiple point source pollution sources identified: Maspalomas EBAR overflow; two submarine outfalls at Los Cochinos I and II; freshwater discharge from pools; Las Burras wastewater treatment plant (EDAR); drain pipes from Las Burras I and II; three Maspalomas wastewater treatment plants (EDAM I, II, and III). Contamination episode occurred 17–18 June 2019 from wastewater discharge due to pump failure. Short-duration pollution types include stormwater runoff from heavy rainfall, raw or treated urban wastewater from outfall breaks or sewer failures, brine discharge from desalination plant reject water, and chlorinated saltwater discharge from pool draining. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae.
