Playa San Agustín is a 670-meter-long coastal beach in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria, Spain. The beach features dark fine sand and is protected from wave exposure, with calm water conditions and a tidal range of 1–3 meters. The water body is classified as a naturally superficial coastal water mass of the southwestern coast, and the ecological state is rated as good or better.

Water

Coastal water, southwestern coastal type (ES70GCTII). Length 670 meters, width 70 meters. Bathymetry 0 to −4 meters. Substrate is dark fine sand. Calm waters with protected wave exposure. Tidal range 1–3 meters. Current regime and annual precipitation data not specified.

Location

Located in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Las Palmas province, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. Pedestrian and vehicular access are both good. Parking is available and good quality. The beach has a promenade and disabled access classified as regular.

Facilities

Lifeguards present. Showers and foot wash available. Services, toilets, bars present. Waste containers, public telephone. Umbrella rental and sun lounger rental available. Pedestrian access good, vehicular access good, disabled access regular. Medical attention available but no on-site doctor.

1 February to 30 November.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on microbiological indicators Escherichia coli and Enterococos intestinales evaluated over four years according to RD 1341/2007. A microbiological contamination episode occurred 21–22 April 2014 with short duration. The underlying water mass is in good ecological state (biological and physical-chemical). Monitoring conducted during swimming season 1 February to 30 November.

Risks

Four identified point sources of pollution: EBAR overflow Monte El Moro, EBAR overflow Playa del Águila, EDAM Morro Besudo, and sewage network. Two watercourses: Barranco de San Agustín and Cañada de la Cueva de Joseíto canal. Potential contamination from stormwater discharge during heavy rainfall, urban wastewater (raw or treated), and brine discharge from desalination. Cyanobacteria Trichodesmium proliferation episodes recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
