Platja Cristall is an open beach located at the southern end of Miami Platja in Mont-roig del Camp, Tarragona, Spain. The beach measures 1,500 metres long with an average width of 66 metres and covers an area of 99,443 square metres. It is bounded to the north by limestone cliffs and to the south by the Llastres River wetland. The beach has low occupancy during summer and features coarse sand with a steep water entry gradient.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing area belongs to water mass C31 (Vandellòs and l'Hospitalet de l'Infant), classified as a sandy, shallow water body with low continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 36.3 to 38.2 psu. Water temperatures: June 21.6°C, July 25.4°C, August 25.5°C, September 24.2°C. Significant wave height averages 81 centimetres with a mean period of 5.24 seconds. Predominant winds are northwesterly and weak. Coastal currents follow a cyclonic circulation pattern with a parallel current to the continental coast.

Location

Mont-roig del Camp municipality, Tarragona Province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated at the southern end of the Miami Platja urban centre. The nearest city is Tarragona.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly (Saturdays) for 17 consecutive weeks during the bathing season.

Water Quality

The bathing water is monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of three times weekly. The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) manages the Beach and Coastal Waters Quality Monitoring Plan. The bathing area is served by the Mont-roig del Camp wastewater treatment system (EDAR), which provides biological treatment. Effluent is discharged to sea via the primary submarine outfall at Estany Gelat beach (1,900 metres long, 31 metres deep) and an emergency outfall at Cristall beach (490 metres long, 9 metres deep). The system treats wastewater from 10,292 residents equivalent to 48,100 population equivalents.

Risks

The Llastres River, located approximately 30 metres south of the bathing zone boundary, does not ordinarily discharge water to sea but may flow into Punta del Riu beach during heavy rainfall.
