Platja de la Punta del Riu is a small semi-enclosed beach in the municipality of Vandellós and l'Hospitalet de l'Infant in Tarragona, Catalonia. The beach is located near the Hospitalet de l'Infant sports port and has a low occupancy rate during summer. It is bordered on the right by the jetty rocks of the sports port and opens to Platja Cristall on the left, where the Llastres river flows into the beach. The beach has an average width of 83 meters and a length of 300 meters.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Semi-enclosed sandy beach with an area of 22,100 square meters. Medium sand sediment with mean grain size (D50) of 0.38 mm. Very steep water entry gradient. Coastline evolution of 0.11 meters per year. The Llastres river is the only source of freshwater but only flows into the beach during heavy rainfall. Low hydrological response velocity index. Water salinity ranges from 28.3 to 38.4 psu. Mean water temperature: June 21.7°C, July 25.5°C, August 25.5°C, September 24.3°C. Significant wave height 81 cm with mean period of 5.24 seconds, predominantly from the east. Predominant sea state: rippled. Predominant wind direction: NW, weak intensity.

Location

Vandellós and l'Hospitalet de l'Infant, Baix Camp region, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. Near the Hospitalet de l'Infant sports port on the Mediterranean coast.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring occurs during 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) during the bathing season. Monitoring includes weekly microbiological analysis for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental inspections occur at least three times weekly, evaluating water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton discoloration, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach belongs to water body C31 (Vandellós and l'Hospitalet de l'Infant), classified as sandy shallow water with low continental influence.

Risks

The Llastres river discharges from the Vandellós treatment plant (EDAR Vandellós) to the river bed. Two submarine outfalls are located nearby: the main Hospitalet de l'Infant outfall at Platja de l'Arenal (1,760 meters long, 25 meters deep) and the Almadrava outfall at Platja de l'Almadrava (850 meters long, 19 meters deep). The Almadrava urban development discharges wastewater directly to sea through its own outfall.
