Platja d'Aiguablava is a narrow, enclosed beach located in the municipality of Begur in the Baix Empordà region of Catalonia, northeastern Spain. The beach is situated among rocky terrain corresponding to the Begur mountains and is bordered by cliffs to the north and south. It covers an area of 1,582 square metres with an average width of 24 metres and a length of 70 metres. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months. The surrounding area is semi-natural and residential.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Rocky deep water mass (C14 Begur-Blanes) with low continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 36.6 to 38.4 practical salinity units. Water temperatures: June 20.3°C, July 22.9°C, August 23.2°C, September 21.7°C. Significant wave height 0.87 metres with average period of 5.55 seconds. Predominant state: flat sea. Predominant wind direction: east, weak intensity.

Location

Begur municipality, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is enclosed within a rocky coastal section of the Begur mountains.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring conducted for 17 consecutive weeks: microbiological sampling weekly on Saturdays; environmental monitoring with minimum 3 weekly inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring includes analysis of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring evaluates water transparency, colour, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton spots, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The bathing water belongs to water mass C14 (Begur-Blanes), classified as rocky deep water with low continental influence.

Risks

The beach receives water input from surface runoff through an ancient torrent now occupied by a parking area. Three wastewater treatment systems serve the Begur municipality: Pals, Begur, and Palamós, with treated effluent discharged via submarine outfalls at sa Tuna and Fornells beaches.
