Platja Fonda is a coved beach located among rocky cliffs in the Begur mountains on the Catalan coast. The beach measures 131 meters in length with an average width of 18 meters and a total surface area of 2,375 square meters. It features very coarse sand with a steep water entry slope and is situated in a semi-natural and residential environment. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Rocky type coastal water mass (C14 Begur-Blanes) with deep profile and low continental influence. Mediterranean Sea location with mean salinity 36.8–38.4 psu. Water temperatures average 20.0°C in June, 22.7°C in July, 23.1°C in August, and 21.4°C in September. Significant wave height averages 0.87 meters with mean period of 5.55 seconds. Predominant winds are easterly and weak. Water mass forms part of the Rieres del cap de Begur-Blanes river basin covering 336 square kilometers.

Location

Begur municipality in Baix Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bounded by rocky outcrops and cliffs to the north and south. Information about facilities and parking is available from the Begur municipal website.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly from the first week of June through the third week of September according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections occur at minimum three times weekly and assess transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

The beach is located in a coastal zone with a high hydrological response velocity index during rainfall episodes. Nearby surface water runoff flows through a small stream that discharges outside the beach boundaries. Monitoring includes surveillance for phytoplankton proliferation that may affect human health and marine ecosystems.
