Platja d'en Goixa is a semi-sheltered beach located in the urban nucleus of Colera municipality in Alt Empordà comarca, Catalonia. The beach measures 151 meters in length with an average width of 15 meters and covers 2,333 square meters. It is bounded to the north by rocky terrain and to the south by Platja de les Portes and Colera port. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water mass type: C1 Portbou-Llançà, rocky deep with moderate continental influence. Average salinity range: 33.0–38.5 psu. Mean water temperature: June 19.6°C, July 22.1°C, August 21.4°C, September 20.1°C. Significant wave height 0.61 m with mean period of 5.82 seconds. Predominant wind direction: NE-weak. Predominant sea state: rippled. Water entrance gradient: moderate. Annual coastline evolution: 0.07 m/year.

Location

Colera municipality (578 inhabitants) in Alt Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated in the urban nucleus. More information available at the Colera municipal website.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring conducted over 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological analysis (Saturdays) and minimum 3 weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality monitored according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators tested: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Monitored weekly during bathing season. Environmental inspections evaluate transparency, colour, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The water mass C1 has moderate continental influence.

Risks

Riera Molinàs is the nearest water course but discharges into the port outside beach limits, releasing water only during heavy rainfall. Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored as part of a dedicated surveillance program; most cases produce only coloured patches with no risk to swimmers. Jellyfish presence is monitored during bathing season.
