Arrigunaga is a 628-meter beach located in the municipality of Getxo in the Algorta district, part of the external Abra estuary of the Nerbioi River. The beach has an area of 51,425 square meters at low tide and 34,780 square meters at high tide, with fine sand composition and a northwest orientation. It is protected to some extent by the Arriluze counter-pier and is considered to have calm waters with low wave exposure. The beach has a residential setting and moderate user attendance.

Water

External Abra estuary of the Nerbioi River. Length 628 meters, mean width 68 meters, surface area 51,425 square meters at low tide and 34,780 square meters at high tide. Fine sand composition. Tidal range 4.8 meters with minimum tide of 1 meter. Water renewal time exceeds 7 days.

Location

Getxo, Algorta district, Bizkaia province, Spain. Bordered by the Abasotas cliffs on the left and Punta Galea cliffs on the right. Parking available with 150 spaces.

Water Quality

Water quality classification under Directive 2006/7/CE: EXCELLENT for 2008 and 2010, GOOD for 2009. Monitoring performed by the Public Health Department of the Basque Government. Primary pollution sources include urban wastewater treated at the Galindo wastewater treatment plant and discharged into the Galindo River approximately 9.5 kilometers upstream; industrial discharges from chemical, steel, energy and food plants; Bilbao port operations and sports ports; maritime traffic; shipyards and storm water overflows.

Risks

Storm water overflows. Industrial discharges from diverse industrial facilities. Sediments from dredging operations in the port area and potential introduction of non-native species from port activities.
