Cal Cristià-Cortal de la Vila is an open beach in Sant Pere Pescador municipality in Alt Empordà county, Girona, Catalonia. The beach stretches 1,500 meters with an average width of 60 meters and covers a surface area of 90,000 square meters. It is situated in a semi-natural agricultural setting with fine sand sediment and experiences medium summer occupancy. The beach is bordered to the north by Can Sopa-la Gola and to the south by Cortal de la Devesa.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Sandy shallow beach with fine sediment (D50 = 0.23 mm). Mean salinity ranges from 35.0 to 38.3 psu. Water temperature: June 20.5°C, July 22.9°C, August 22.6°C, September 21.5°C. Significant wave height 0.61 meters with mean period 5.82 seconds and most frequent direction N. Weak easterly winds predominant. Rippled sea conditions dominant. Continental influence level: high. Beach slope at water entry: very steep. Coastal line evolution: -3.51 m/year. Water mass C8 (St Pere Pescador-Fluvià sandy shallow type with high continental influence).

Season

Official monitoring period: June to September.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored from June to September according to Directive 2006/7/CE and Royal Decree 1341/2007. Classification categories are Excellent, Good, Sufficient, and Insufficient based on microbiological analysis of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Bi-weekly sampling and analysis conducted. Caution warnings may be issued during heavy rainfall or occasional sewage incidents when water may be temporarily unsuitable for bathing.

Risks

The beach receives permanent freshwater input through the Riuet (or riu Vell) estuary at the southern end of the bathing zone. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring has been conducted since 2000.
