Platja del Cortal de la Devesa is an open beach located in Sant Pere Pescador municipality in Alt Empordà county, Catalonia. The beach stretches 1,750 metres with an average width of 60 metres and covers 105,000 square metres. It features fine sand with a steep water entry gradient and experiences moderate summer occupancy. The beach is situated in a semi-natural agricultural environment with only camping facilities nearby.

Mediterranean Sea coastal water body. Average width 60 metres, length 1,750 metres, surface area 105,000 square metres. Fine sand substrate with median grain size 0.23 mm. Steep water entry gradient. Coastline evolution -3.51 metres per year. Average salinity 35.0–38.3 psu. Water temperatures: June 20.5°C, July 22.9°C, August 22.6°C, September 21.5°C. Significant wave height 0.61 metres, mean period 5.82 seconds. Predominant wind direction east with weak intensity. Predominant sea state rippled.

Location

Sant Pere Pescador, Alt Empordà county, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bordered to the north by Platja de Cal Cristial-Cortal de la Vila. Coordinates: UTM EU50 X:512903; Y:4664120 (for the Emissari de l'Escala reference point).

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored biweekly from June to September by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Monitoring includes microbiological analysis of faecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci). Classification categories are Excellent, Good, Sufficient, and Insufficient. Annual classifications are based on analytical data from the preceding four years. Temporary classifications are updated biweekly.

Risks

The beach receives permanent freshwater inflow from the Riuet (Riu Vell) outlet located at the southern edge of the bathing zone. Phytoplankton proliferation control programme has been in place since 2000 to monitor algal blooms in the bathing waters. Precautionary notices are issued when temporary water quality affection occurs due to rainfall or occasional sewage incidents.
