Platja de Calafató is a small U-shaped cove in L'Ametlla de Mar, Tarragona, naturally delimited by rocks on both sides and situated in a residential environment. The beach has an average width of 28 metres and a length of 50 metres, with fine sand sediment. It experiences medium occupancy during summer and is located near the Calafat and Sant Jordi d'Alfama marinas.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water body belonging to water mass C31 (Vandellòs i l'Hospitalet de l'Infant), classified as sandy shallow water with low continental influence. Surface area of the beach is 2,754 square metres. Water temperatures range from 22.1°C in June to 25.8°C in July and August, declining to 24.4°C in September. Average salinity ranges from 35.7 to 38.3 psu. Significant wave height averages 81 cm with a mean period of 5.24 seconds.

Location

L'Ametlla de Mar, Tarragona, Baix Ebre comarca, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated on the Mediterranean coast with the Calafat stream (barranc) in the vicinity, though the stream does not discharge into the sea.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control is conducted weekly on Saturdays during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspections are carried out a minimum of three times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) under European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental parameters assessed include water transparency, colour, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach is served by the Ametlla de Mar wastewater treatment system with a biological EDAR treating 8,436 population equivalents, with treated effluent discharged to sea via the Alguer submarine outfall at Alguer beach.

Risks

The beach is subject to monitoring for phytoplankton proliferation, which can be a natural phenomenon during summer months. The area has low hydrological response index (VRH) to heavy rainfall episodes. Predominant sea state is rippled with northwest winds of weak intensity.
